What is an Intensive?

  • A reading intensive is a short-term, highly focused program designed to help students make meaningful progress in a relatively short period of time.

At Spectrum School, each intensive is fully individualized. We begin with a targeted assessment to identify exactly where your child is in their reading development. From there, we create a customized plan and adjust instruction continuously based on your child’s progress.

Sessions use the structured, research-based method of Orton Gillingham to teach reading. This means instruction is:

  • Explicit and systematic

  • Multisensory

  • Tailored to how your child learns best

Because of the increased frequency and consistency, intensives allow for:

  • Faster skill development

  • Stronger retention of new concepts

  • Greater confidence as students experience success more quickly

Most students attend 2–5 times per week, depending on their goals and availability. We’ll work with you to create a schedule that supports both progress and your family’s routine.

Who is this for?

Our summer intensives are a great fit if your child:

  • Struggles with reading, decoding, or spelling

  • Has dyslexia or suspected dyslexia

  • Has ADHD or other learning differences that affect reading

  • Is reading below grade level and needs to catch up before fall

  • Needs support with reading, writing, or math

  • Would benefit from focused, 1-on-1 attention rather than a classroom setting

  • Has tried other tutoring but hasn't seen enough progress

You don't need a formal diagnosis to enroll. If your child is struggling with reading, writing, or math, and you want to do something about it this summer, we'd love to talk.

What Progress Looks Like

  • Increased ability to sound out unfamiliar words, (instead of guessing).

  • Increased reading fluency - reading will sound smoother and less choppy, more like regular speech.

  • Less fatigue with reading.

  • Improved spelling, and improved ability to remember and apply spelling rules.

  • Students choosing to read aloud or read independently more often (without being prompted)

  • Increased confidence in themselves as learners.

  • A more positive experience of school.

Jordan cares about her students. I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone including parents of children who have disabilities or learning differences. Jordan really listened to my daughter. She assured me that she didn’t think my daughter was lazy, she said my daughter was actually fatigued and frustrated. It turns out Jordan was right. My daughter is now getting the support she needs and has improved a lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Summer scheduling is very flexible. Generally we set a schedule that works for your family most weeks (sessions are available Monday - Sunday 7am - 8pm), then adjust as needed for things like camps and travel.

  • We are committed to affordability, and keep our prices as low as we reasonably can. The more hours your do, the lower the hourly cost is. Our prices are currently about half of other intensive programs like Lindamood Bell. (Which we can do because we are local and keep our overhead low). Reach out about your specific case and we can give you a quote.

  • Intensives can either take place at our Boulder office, in student homes, or at an agreed upon 3rd space such as the child’s school, camp, or library.

  • Great Question! Every child’s learning profile and situation is unique - that’s why our programming is not one-size-fits-all. Reach out to us and we can help you sort through your child’s needs and make a plan. You can trust that we will always be honest about whether our program is the right fit. If not, we are still happy to help you make sense of the information you have and point you toward relevant resources.
