Jaime Updegraff
My name is Jaime Updegraff. I have 15 years of teaching experience, and currently work at a middle school in St. Vrain as a literacy teacher and math interventionist. I have a BA in English, an MA in literacy, and am certified to teach elementary school, secondary language arts, and special education. I taught high school English for five years early in my career; then after ten years of staying home with my three children, I returned to the classroom as an elementary special education teacher and now as a literacy teacher.
I have completed several OG trainings and have created resources to work on these skills with secondary students in an appropriate and engaging way. My passion is designing and tailoring lessons that meet students' individual needs and cater to their unique interests and learning styles. Ultimately, my goal when working with students is not only to improve their skills but also to build their confidence and foster a love of reading.
When not in the classroom, I enjoy gardening, swimming, and spending time with my husband, my beagle Louie, and my three teenagers (whenever they will let me).
Christopher DeAndrea
My goal is to develop and foster an enthusiasm for learning and applying Mathematics. If you give me the slightest opportunity to discuss math, watch out! Parabolas, Determinants, and Rhombi will be flying around. Fractions and decimals will be hanging out together. Unknowns will be making plans with constants. I have been tutoring math, off and on since the 1980's when I attended the Colorado School of Mines, where I graduated with High Scholastic Honors with a major in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics.During my childhood I was frequently barraged by impromptu science, history, and language arts lessons from my mother, uncle, and aunt - all middle-school teachers. I greatly enjoy the learning I get to experience whenever I am working as a tutor or teacher. There is no teaching without learning, and every student is a teacher, every teacher a student. Professionally, I have worked as a software engineer at several major technology companies in the telecommunications, space imaging, data storage and acquisition, and robotics industries. I have developed a web site for 2-D and 3-D Cartesian graphical displays to supplement high-school math curricula, and a web site for collaborative creative writing.I currently work part time during the day as an Academic Tutor with the Boulder Valley School District where I help students during study hall period, and part time on weekends at the Broomfield Huntington Learning Center tutoring students for ACT and SAT test prep, geometry, algebra, physics and other subjects.

Education:
Bachelor of Arts, Special Education Major/Speech and Language Minor
Metropolitan State University of Denver/K-12 Certification 2006
2002 & 2011 Orton Gillingham Training and Certification, Erie, CO. Ron Yoshimoto
Like so many classroom teachers before me, I was inspired to find a way to help students who were struggling to read. I felt so much compassion for these capable and hardworking students who just weren't learning to read the way the school was teaching it. I also know that a child’s classroom experiences are such a big part of their life, that when they struggle at school, their whole being is affected. On the flip side, when that child is fortunate enough to meet someone who truly understands the challenges they face, and can show them a new way to learn, the experience can be life-changing.Happily, I found Orton-Gillingham training and became empowered to become that person. I have been a member of the International Dyslexia Association since 2002, and this affiliation with so many gifted educators has been my guide. Since becoming certified, I have worked as a classroom teacher, a private tutor, and a reading interventionist in 1-1 settings. I also worked as a specialist at Hillside School, which specializes in Dyslexia. Needless to say, I love my work!
When I have free time, I love to garden, walk my golden retriever, travel to beaches anywhere, and spend time with my family. I love building community locally, and have lived in the area for the past 35 years. I look forward to meeting you and seeing how I can support your child!
Fort Collins:
Scott Barret
I have been a special education teacher for over 10 years, Throughout my teaching career I have worked with students in grades K-5. The students I work with have varying degrees of disabilities. I love helping students that struggle to learn be able to succeed in school.
I graduated from the University of Montana with Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, an elementary education degree, an endorsement in special education, and a special endorsement in teaching students with low incidence disabilities.
I taken many trainings and classes on reading and math. Last year I was certified in Orton Gillingham, and I just finished the level 1 math recovery class.
My teaching philosophy is work with a child's strengths to build confidence. I used multiple learning styles/strategies within a lesson. I think multisensory education is important. I also think its critical to understand where the student is at in the development of a skill, and systematically teach the skills a student needs to progress to the next step in the learning progression.
